This one started as a sketch on a napkin. We wanted a planter that sat in a corner and looked like it absolutely did not want to be there. The quarter-circle base came first, practical, space-saving, unexpected. Then the face arrived: heavy brow coils, half-closed eyes, a mouth that says everything without saying anything. Customers keep telling us it is the first piece they ever finished and the one still sitting on their windowsill.

We built this one because we were tired of mugs that looked the same. The challenge was making a face that felt genuinely happy, not the flat printed kind, but something sculpted, slightly uneven, alive. The crescent eyes and raised cheeks took four rounds of testing before they sat right. Now it is the most gifted piece in the collection. People order it for birthdays, for new homes, for no reason at all.

The pit was the hardest part. Getting a raised dome that looked natural, stayed attached through firing and did not dominate the face took longer than the rest of the template combined. Once it worked, everything else fell into place. The rounded edges, the two-glaze approach and the face sitting just below the pit make this one of the most photographed pieces our customers build. It ends up on every kitchen counter.

The dome eyes were a deliberate risk. Adding two raised bumps to the top corners of a mug could have looked clumsy. Instead they became the signature detail that makes this piece immediately recognisable. The lopsided grin underneath seals it. Customers who build this one always send us photos. It is the piece that makes other people in the room ask if they can have one too.
